You Can Now Get Free Books in Your Next Happy Meal

Three cheers for child literacy!’s no secret that McDonald’s has gotten a bad rap lately, mostly thanks to its high-calorie fast food meals. (Not to mention that secret ingredient behind the addictive flavor of McDonald’s French fries.) Yuck!

But whether you’re six years old or 60 years old, you might want to stop by your nearest store soon. McDonald’s will include a free miniature-sized book with every Happy Meal purchase, starting from September 5 to 18.

The fast-food chain is teaming up with HarperCollins Publishers in honor of National Literacy Month to promote reading for children. In each Happy Meal box, you’ll find a copy of Pete the Cat’s Got Class by James Dean, Amelia Bedelia’s First Day of School by Herman Parish, Just A School Project by Mercer Mayer, or If You Take a Mouse to School by Laura Numeroff. Books will be available in both English and Spanish and found at select locations.

And that’s not all! McDonald’s plans to partner with Reading Is Fundamental (RIF), an American non-profit that promotes child literacy, to create new online platform that extends your family’s reading experience beyond the page. The website will offer interactive lesson plans, puzzles, activities, and reading passages for all age levels. You can also try these tips to make reading fun for your child.

McDonald’s will also donate approximately 400,000 books to RIF in order to promote literacy programs across the nation. After all, there’s no better way to encourage reading than by putting a book in the hands of each and every child.

“McDonald’s partnership with RIF is a celebration of the power and joy of families reading together,” Beth Meyer, Chief Marketing Officer of RIF, said in a statement. “Six out of 10 low-income families still have no age-appropriate books in their homes, so providing children with books coupled with supplemental literacy resources they need to achieve their full potential has never been more important.”
