The Museum of Miniature Houses in Indiana

Don’t be surprised if you find yourself humming “It’s a Small World” at this museum, where the actual, the historical, and the fantastic are replicated on a scale of 1 inch to 1 foot.

When you peer at, inside, and around a classic San Francisco house—complete with handsome contemporary furniture and a thriving backyard garden—you may not hear the cable cars clanging, but you’ll be transported from Carmel, Indiana, to the City by the Bay. And yes, a person is tending to scale-model flowers in the garden. Elsewhere in the museum a breadbox houses a fully equipped vintage kitchen: sink, table and chair, utensils, and even a toddler on the floor.

Special exhibitions are held each season of the year, introducing visitors to painstakingly crafted works like those of famous miniaturist Robert Olszewski—pieces showing how some miniatures can rise to the level of fine art.
