20 Best Rain Boots For Every Style And Budget In 2022 Featurerd.com, via merchant (4)

Rain boots deserve a special spot in your wardrobe

You already know that a well-rounded shoe collection needs a winter boot, a snow boot, and a walking shoe. But we’re here to tell you that rain boots are just as essential. Although sometimes overlooked, the best rain boots for women have a variety of features that you won’t find in other shoes—and that make wet and dreary days so much better. More lightweight than winter boots, these waterproof wonders ease the transition from winter to spring and summer to fall. In warmer climates, you can even wear them year-round.

If the thought of rain boots conjures up images of unstylish galoshes, fear not—these spring boots have come a long way from the clunky boots of yesteryear. “Rain boots are a classic item and can add a bit of diversity to your wardrobe since there are so many selections of styles, colors, and prints,” says wardrobe stylist Beverly Osemwenkhae. These days, you can find rain boots that are fashion-forward, office-appropriate, edgy, or preppy—and adorable rain jackets and umbrellas to match.

What to look for in rain boots

To make sure you’re choosing wisely, George P. H., founder of Shoethority, says you need to consider three things: waterproofing, comfort, and easiness to clean. “A rain boot is only as good as its waterproofing,” he says. Boots that are cast in one piece of rubber tend to be best in this department. To determine whether or not a pair is cast in one piece, look for seams. If you can see them, the boot is not, and those seams could eventually tear and let in small amounts of water.

Additionally, look for a boot with a cushioned footbed that will keep you comfortable all day. That means a site’s description of your rain boot should include a reference to its sole, footbed, or interior. You’ll also want a pair that’s easy to clean with a hose or damp cloth, and rubber boots are usually the best bet.

How we chose the best rain boots

To find the best rain boots for women, we scrolled through thousands of online reviews and asked P.H. for his top picks. Each of the options available from Amazon has an average rating of four stars or higher and a minimum of 500 reviews. Non-Amazon boots come highly recommended or are considered top tier by industry experts.

What makes a good rain boot?

As mentioned earlier, when shopping for rain boots, there are three factors to consider: construction, comfort, and easiness to clean. Let’s start with construction quality, which can impact your boot’s waterproofing. “If construction quality is low, you risk getting small cracks, fissures, and other tears in the rubber quickly,” says P.H. “That’s why it’s important to get a boot that’s put together well.” A shoe that’s cast in one piece (meaning, it’s seamless) will be most dependable.

Then, there’s comfort. “Old-school rain boots were basically rubber galoshes that didn’t have much going for them comfort-wise,” says P.H. “But modern rain boots have comfort features that make standing and walking easier on the feet, knees, and hips.” For walking, P.H. recommends looking for a sole that has flexibility and moderate cushioning. For standing, he suggests high cushioning and some arch support.

And finally, the cleaning factor. “Rubber boots can get messy—fast,” says P.H. “Stuff clings to them. You want them to be easy to clean.” You should be able to clean most waterproof shoes with a damp cloth or a damp cloth with gentle dish detergent. And an important note: Never dry your rain boots in direct sunlight or near a heater, since this can cause the rubber to crack.

How do you know if a rain boot is high quality?

Most quality rubber rain boots are cast in one piece, which minimizes the number of seams on the boot and decreases the chances of a hole or tear.

P.H. notes that a high-quality boot will also have a thick outsole that keeps your feet above the water and adds some cushioning. You’ll also want to assess the boot’s technology. A quality pair will “have comfort features like breathable Gore-Tex membranes and quality insoles,” says P.H.

Depending on the activities you plan to do in your boots, you should choose the technology to match. If you’ll be hiking, you’ll want a boot with tread. If you’ll be out in the cold, you’ll want one with a liner, and so on.

How can you style rain boots?

Rain boots are some of the most fun footwear options to style. We suggest wearing knee-high rain boots with leggings, shorts, or skirts. “I love wearing rain boots with a printed maxi dress or pleated skirt for a daytime spring look, or with a pair of denim shorts and an oversize blazer and a band tee,” says Osemwenkhae. “You can also go full monochrome and have a printed rain boot as the focus point.” Who knew that these spring boots could elevate your entire outfit?

Ankle-height rain boots can be worn with wide-leg jeans or skinny jeans—just like your favorite pair of Chelsea boots or lug-sole boots. They can also be worn tucked into leggings. Pair your boots with a funky raincoat to put the finishing touch on your rainy-day outfit and you’ll be all set to brave the elements in style.
